Why College Athletes Should Be Paid…

As I pondered what I wanted to do my free inquiry project on, I thought to myself, what is something you are most passionate, you have an idea of but also you don’t know enough about.  What came to mind was to discuss why college athletes should be paid. Now I’m sure many of you reading this are thinking: “Well a lot of them are anyways.”   The fact of the matter is, most athletes are unable to work, unable to make any income, and never see any profit from jersey sales, ticket sales, or any team generated revenue.  My reason for choosing this topic is because I have experienced what exactly it is like to attend a university, have a scholarship to play a sport and see what it is like for student athletes to go through.  Over the duration of my four years at the University of the District of Columbia, my experience went from being the more reserved and quiet spoken one, to growing into a leadership role as a captain where I would discuss and meet frequently with my coaches and teammates, to in my last year being the president of the student-athlete advisory committee where I was able to work closely with the administrators and higher ups of the athletic department as a whole.  Long story long, I was able to see things from all of the different angles and why things were done they way they were at the institution I attended. After having done so, my question that I was never able to answer is why do student-athletes not get paid? This is a topic that I heard often discussed by a plethora of student athletes throughout campus, but also friends, and athletes from other schools as well.  The reason I still have so many questions is because they were never fully explained or answered.  I saw how it effected so many student athletes and I think there is change that needs to be made to the system that is currently in place. .  As the semester progresses, I intend to research and evaluate this topic further in order to gain a better understanding but also provide first hand examples and evidence into just how I believe the system can often work.  While doing so, I hope to apply my growing foundation of technological skills to integrate different forms of media and multiliteracies to back these points and engaging my readers. I look forward to connecting with you all again soon!
